Glock Gen4 Vs Gen 5 - One of the biggest questions that potential Glock buyers have is what is the difference between the Glock Gen 4 and Gen 5? Glocks are known for making huge leaps in their generations, but there are some notable differences between generations.
I'll start with the overall look, and this article will focus primarily on the Glock 19 Gen 4 and Gen 5, but most of these changes carry over to other models in the Glock line.
Glock Gen4 Vs Gen 5
First, I'll talk about the looks of the Glock 19 Gen 4 and Gen 5 because that's the first thing people usually notice.
The Warrior Glocks
The easiest way to distinguish models is by slide coverage. The color is much darker than the Gen 4.
In general, they look almost the same as before. There were Gen 4 models with front tops.
The Glock Gen 5 slide has front knurling and an nDLC finish. The nDLC coating gives the Gen 5 a semi-gloss deep black finish.
The Glock 19 Gen 5 has an ambidextrous bolt lock lifter that was added to compete for government control that the Sig M17 later won.
Glock Gen 4 Vs Gen 5 Handgun Differences
Glock created a proprietary finish for their slides on the Glock 19 Gen 5 and called it nDLC. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but the finish is said to be stronger and more durable than the previously used finish.
From what I've noticed there is less wear on the bolt due to the holster, and generally using the bolt without oil seems to be smoother.
Pins hit the scene for Glocks in the early 2010s. The Glock Gen 5 now has notches of the factor.
The 4th generation Glock had a special model called "FS" for the front serrations some time before the Gen 5 came out and the front serrations became standard.
Glock 19 Gen 5
I really liked the front pins and had a Gen 4 FS model that I fell in love with.
Glock has always been known for its polygonal rifling on barrels. This was discontinued for Gen 5 stems for a more traditional match crown.
They claim the Gen 5 barrel is "comparable", but for the most part it's just a marketing gimmick. The facts are that the Gen 5 barrel has been tested and is more accurate than its predecessor, and that's really all that matters.
For a short time, the Gen 5 had a cutout in the frame that allowed your fingers to drop into the crescent hole, but they no longer make the Gen 5 with the crescent cutout and no front tips.
Glock 17 Gen 4 Vs Gen 5
In the current frame, the finger groves have been removed. If you are not familiar with finger grooves, they are the most talked about topic in the Glock community. Finger slots are located on the front of the handle and are almost universally hated.
As you can see in the picture, finger slots were a Glock staple for many years, and they were eventually removed on the Gen 5, most likely permanently.
The removal of the finger groves is a huge change considering the Glock kept them for so long. It's great to see the removal, and most people welcome the change with open arms.
The Glock 19's internals were redesigned in Gen 5 and a simpler pin system was created to facilitate complete disassembly. This was a welcome change for Glock gun makers around the world.

The store niche of the Glock 19 Gen 5 also expands much more than that of the Glock 19 Gen 4.
As you can see in the picture, this is a significant difference, but if you are used to the Glock, the expanding store will only help you a little.
Oh sure. The magazines have not changed since the Glock 19 Gen 3. So if you have old magazines in good condition, you should be able to continue using them in the future.
Gen 3 magazines have only one notch on the right side to hook the magazine. Gen 4 and Gen 5 have notches on either side of the magazine to make them backwards compatible.

Gen 4 magazine has a black subscriber and Gen 5 has an orange subscriber. This is the only difference between the two magazines.
You can even use Glock magazine adapters to fill in the gaps if you want to use a Glock 17 magazine.
Glock also changed the trigger, making it steeper, redesigning the trigger spring, and redesigning the safety plunger.
Glock still makes their Gen 3 series Glocks, which may seem odd to most since there have been two generations since Gen 3.
Gen 5 Glock 19 Internal Parts Overview
The main reason Glock continues to keep Gen 3 models is because of California's unconstitutional handgun registry.
Because of California's rear sight of firearms, they have a handgun registry and only approved firearms on that registry are allowed to be sold in the state. As you may have guessed, the Glock Gen 3 models are on the approved list.
Fortunately, the Gen 3 holds up and is just as solid and reliable as the newer generations, just missing some of the new, nicer features.
So until California is forgotten for violating constitutional rights, the Glock Gen 3 will likely live on.
Glock Gen 2
Finally, the Glock Gen 3 and Gen 5 are the only two pistols in production. As I noted in the section above, Gen 3 will probably live until California joins.
If you're in the market for a new Glock and don't live in California, be sure to get the Gen 5 instead of the Gen 4. The subtle changes Glock has made to this pistol are both notable and welcome additions.

The first and best reason to consider this pistol is that it is a Glock 19; possibly the best all-around pistol ever made. It is large enough to be a service weapon and provides operational accuracy and significant magazine capacity, while still being small and light for everyday concealed carry.

In addition, the excellent reliability of Glock pistols cannot be ignored. In my own experience, I have fired over 100,000 rounds with Glock Gen 3 and Gen 4 pistols, and the only malfunctions I have ever encountered were due to faulty non-Glock replacement parts and poor Cerakote performance. With standard parts, the Glock pistol is almost flawless in performance even in harsh environments.
As for the Gen 5, you may want to consider the new Glock 19 for a few good reasons. First, the bolt lock is now double sided. So if you're left-handed, turn the trigger to the right and you'll have a gun that's completely left-handed. For those of you who love Glock pistols, but not the finger grooves on the grip, the Gen 5 comes with a flat front grip strap. No customization required.
